The photos were taken during the third and last edition of the Festival des Marionnettes Géantes de Diabolo, a village 4 km south of Djenné in Mali. It was originally a traditional ceremony celebrating the good harvest and asking the “djinn”, supernatural creatures part of the Islamic mythology, to provide a new, rich one for the following season. It used to gather people from all over the region and featured parades, competitions, expositions, “marionnettes” (Thiakos) representing men and animals, music and traditional dances. The first edition was held in 2007 and it hasn’t taken place since the 2012 Islamists’ takeover in the area.
